Cultural Awareness Training
MDWg delivers Cultural Awareness Training for people living and/or working on Miriwoong country. Our language and culture awareness course targets employees of government departments, people working with non-profit organisations, and agencies that interact with local Aboriginal people in the Kununurra region in one way or another. The seminar largely focuses on the practical issues of day-to-day communication, rather than providing comprehensive background knowledge about Aboriginal history which could be acquired elsewhere. It should be emphasised that the information delivered during the course explicitly relates to the Miriwoong people, who are the traditional land owners of this area. While cultural similarities with other groups might exist, Mirima Language Centre is not in a position to lecture about these.
It is our aim that through this course, some misconceptions and misunderstandings typically occurring between Miriwoong and non-Indigenous people are overcome. Based on the feedback received from past participants working for over 20 organisations, the knowledge acquired during the Miriwoong language and culture day has been highly beneficial for all parties involved.
