BARDENYIRRINY ANIMALS
Dabaroong
Pelican
- The Pelican lives in both saltwater and freshwater country
- When the Pelican starts flying around in a certain way, it indicates that the country is getting dry
Goorrandalng
Brolga
- The Brolga is a large grey bird that lives in most areas of Miriwoong country, particularly in the wetland areas
- When Brolgas are seen flying around in circles high up in the sky it means they are looking for water in the hot time
Jaliwang
Barramundi
- The Barramundi is a large fish that lives in the saltwater and freshwater systems of the Kimberley and other regions of Northern Australia
- The Barramundi breeds at the end of the hot season and through the wet season
- It is a much sought after food source for the Miriwoong people
Bootheng
March Flies
- March flies start to come out everywhere in November and indicate the beginning of the hotter seasons
- They are particularly common near water and can inflict a painful bite
- Miriwoong people use to keep them away
Nyinyi
Double-barred Finch
- The Double-barred finch is a small bird found mainly around places where there is water
- In the dry season the Miriwoong people use the bird as an indicator to help them find water
