Bilbiljing
Grasshopper
- The Grasshopper is found all over the country and comes out during the wet season
- Grasshoppers are a significant part of the food chain for many of the animals, like the Goanna, Frill-necked lizard and some bird species
Dawarrg
Plains Goanna
- The Plains goanna is a kind of goanna found all over Australia
- It is an important food for the Miriwoong people
- When the first thunder calls, the Plains goanna buries itself in the ground
- When the rains arrives, it comes out nice and fat
Goowarding
Bream
- Bream is a popular fish found in the freshwater systems around the country
- Miriwoong people like to catch bream because of its fat which is a good source of energy
Goorandalng
Brolga
- The Brolga is a large grey bird that lives in most areas of the East Kimberley
- They can often be spotted in the wetlands
- When bolgas dance, it’s usually a sign that rain is on the way
- The Brolga nests throughout the wet season through to March
Moonamang
Magpie Goose
- The Magpie goose is a large black and white bird
- These birds live in flocks around the wetlands
- They nest in the wet season
- Magpie geese are a food source for the Miriwoong people.
